Tom — a British architect who had just received his visa M-Trabajador — walked into the Migración Colombia office in Medellín with his appointment confirmed for the cédula de extranjería. The officer at the window checked his passport: it had four months of validity remaining. He was turned away. His employer's HR team, the immigration forum posts he had read, the visa confirmation email itself — none had mentioned the 6-month passport validity requirement. He rebooked his passport renewal from a "next year" task to an emergency appointment at the UK consulate in Bogotá. Three weeks and a flight to Bogotá later, he had his new passport — and rescheduled the cédula appointment from scratch.
The cédula de extranjería is Colombia's national identity document for foreign nationals holding M or R visas. It is not the visa itself — it is the document that converts a visa into a daily-use ID in Colombia, allowing the holder to open bank accounts, sign leases, interact with the DIAN, and operate as an identified resident without carrying a passport everywhere.

Who Must Apply for the Cédula de Extranjería
The cédula de extranjería is mandatory for every foreigner who enters Colombia on an M (Migrante) or R (Residente) visa and stays more than 30 days. Short-stay V-visa holders are not required to obtain it. The obligation arises within the first 15 business days after entering Colombia on the M or R visa. Failure to apply within this window generates a migration fine.
Required Documents
- Valid passport with at least 6 months of residual validity at the time of the appointment
- Valid M or R visa (printed or electronic format)
- Recent passport-style photograph on white background (Migración Colombia may take one during the appointment)
- Completed application form from the Migración Colombia portal
- Scheduled appointment booked through the portal
The Process Step by Step
The process begins at migracioncolombia.gov.co: complete the application form online and book an appointment at the regional office corresponding to your municipality of residence. At the in-person appointment, documents are verified, biometric data is captured (fingerprints and photograph), and a permanent personal identification number (NUIP) is assigned. The cédula is produced at Migración Colombia's Document Production Center and is available for pickup at the office where the appointment took place, generally 15–30 business days later.
Validity and Renewal with the Visa
The cédula de extranjería is valid for the same period as the underlying M visa. When the M visa is renewed, the cédula must also be updated. The NUIP number stays the same — only the expiry date changes. The update requires a new in-person appointment, but biometrics may not be recaptured if fewer than 5 years have passed since the last capture.
What You Can Do with the Cédula in Colombia
With the cédula de extranjería, a foreigner can: open bank accounts without presenting a passport; sign rental contracts; access private healthcare as an identified resident; establish companies as legal representative; register with the DIAN (RUT); and perform any civil procedure requiring identification before Colombian institutions. It does not replace the passport for international travel or for procedures before the Cancillería.
