Colombia Spouse Visa 2026: Documents, the Hidden Requests, and the Path to Citizenship

V-Fí: official checklist plus what reviewers actually request. De facto unions need notarial acta. Maternity coverage required even if not pregnant. 2 years to naturalization — fastest route to Colombian citizenship.

For James and Valentina, the Colombian bureaucracy delivered a surprise neither had expected. Their civil registry of marriage, performed in the UK, was impeccably apostilled and translated. Their shared lease agreement, utility bills, and three years of social media photographs documented their life together in Bogotá convincingly. But the Cancillería's analyst flagged the application for an additional request: a notarized declaration of effective cohabitation signed by two Colombian nationals who could attest to the couple's shared residence. This is a request that appears nowhere in the official checklist — but is standard practice when the application reviewer judges the proof of cohabitation to be insufficient.

The V-Fí (family visa) for the spouse or permanent partner of a Colombian national is one of Colombia's most-requested visa categories, and one of the most variable in terms of what individual reviewers request beyond the standard checklist.

Documents: The Official List and What Reviews Actually Request

The official Cancillería checklist for the V-Fí requires: the marriage certificate apostilled and translated if not in Spanish; valid passports for both spouses; proof of the Colombian spouse's nationality; proof of effective cohabitation; and medical coverage compliant with Art. 11 of Resolution 5477/2022. In practice, reviewers frequently request additional cohabitation evidence when the documentation is limited to a single lease agreement. The safest applications include: signed joint lease, utility bills in both names, bank statements showing shared expenses, dated photographs over time, and optionally a notarized declaration of cohabitation by witnesses.

De Facto Unions: The Unión Marital de Hecho

Couples who are not married but have been living together may apply under the V-Fí category by demonstrating a unión marital de hecho — a Colombian legal concept equivalent to common-law marriage. This requires an acta de unión marital de hecho issued by a Colombian notary, which in turn requires documenting at least two years of cohabitation. Same-sex couples have the same legal access to unión marital de hecho recognition as heterosexual couples under the 2016 Constitutional Court ruling. The notarial process typically takes 5 to 15 business days.

Medical Coverage: The Maternity Clause

Art. 11 of Resolution 5477/2022 requires coverage for illness, accident, maternity, disability, and death/repatriation. For spouses of reproductive age, the maternity coverage requirement is strictly enforced. Plans that exclude maternity — including some international travel plans that carve out pregnancy — fail the Art. 11 standard even if all other categories are fully covered. The medical coverage certificate must be issued to the applicant (the foreign spouse) individually, not to the Colombian spouse.

The Path to Citizenship

Two continuous years of residency in Colombia under the V-Fí visa, while maintaining the marital or partnership relationship, satisfies the two-year residency requirement for naturalization under Art. 9 of Ley 2332/2023 for spouses of Colombian nationals. This is the fastest route to Colombian citizenship available to foreigners — faster than the general five-year route and faster than the Andean Community route for non-CAN nationals.
