Colombia Student Visa 2026: Documents, the University Insurance Problem, and Work Limits

MEN-accredited institution required. University insurance often fails Art. 11 — verify before applying. 20 hours/week work allowed in-field only. Documents and process for the M-Estudiante visa.

When Kenji, a 24-year-old Japanese student, enrolled in a two-year Spanish and Latin American Studies program at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, the tuition cost for both years combined was less than what a single semester at his previous institution in Tokyo had cost. The quality of the program was internationally accredited. The city was vibrant. The visa application took three weeks. The one thing Kenji had not planned for was what happened when his student insurance policy — issued by the university — turned out not to meet the Art. 11 requirements of Resolution 5477/2022 for medical coverage. The Cancillería flagged it. He needed to supplement with an additional plan before the visa was approved.

Who Qualifies for the M-Estudiante Visa

The M-Estudiante visa category covers: undergraduate and graduate programs at universities accredited by Colombia's Ministry of Education (MEN); Spanish language courses at recognized institutes with programs of at least 6 months; and formal academic exchange programs with an institutional acceptance letter. Short courses under 6 months can generally be taken under a standard tourist permit without needing a student visa. The institution must be formally accredited by MEN — private language schools that are not registered with the ministry do not support visa applications.

The University Insurance Problem

Most Colombian universities require foreign students to carry medical insurance — either through the university's group policy or through their own private plan. The complication: university group policies vary widely in what they cover and at what limits. Policies that cap coverage below the Art. 11 minimum (which requires coverage for illness, accident, maternity, disability, and death/repatriation), that exclude pre-existing conditions broadly, or that limit coverage to on-campus incidents will not satisfy the Cancillería's standard for the student visa application. Verify the policy against the Art. 11 checklist before submission — not after the flag arrives.

Working on a Student Visa

The M-Estudiante visa permits up to 20 hours per week of field-related work — internships, research assistantships, academic practicas. Work outside the field of study requires a separate work visa or a visa category modification. Students who work more than 20 hours weekly or in unrelated fields are in unauthorized employment — a violation that can result in visa revocation and a note in their migration file that complicates future applications.
