Colombia Visa for Asian Citizens 2026: Who Enters Free, Who Needs a Visa, and the Spanish Translation Rule

Japan, South Korea, Singapore: 90 days visa-free. China, India, Vietnam: visa required for tourism too. Every document needs an official Spanish translation — English included. Mainland China: double legalization, no apostille.

Sung-jin — a South Korean software engineer hired by a Bogotá startup — arrived in Colombia on his 90-day visa-free entry with his employment contract ready. On day 88 he submitted his M-Trabajador visa application. Three weeks later: a documentation request from the Cancillería — his birth certificate, originally in Korean with no Spanish translation attached. Not an English translation, a Spanish one. The visa clock stopped. He left Colombia on day 90 to avoid overstaying, completed the translation from Seoul, and re-entered on a new 90-day permit. The whole process cost him eleven weeks and two international flights.

Asian citizens — Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, and dozens more — are a growing share of Colombia's foreign visa applicants in 2026. Their path has specific rules that generic English-language immigration guides rarely spell out: which nationalities enter visa-free, which require a tourist visa just to arrive, and what the Spanish-translation requirement means in practice for every document in the file.

Asian Nationalities with Visa-Free Access to Colombia

Colombia has bilateral visa-waiver agreements with Japan (90 days), South Korea (90 days), Singapore (90 days), Malaysia (90 days), Turkey (90 days), and Israel (90 days). Citizens of these countries can enter as tourists for up to 90 days with only their passport. The visa-free entry does not authorize work, formal studies, or residence — any of those activities requires applying for the corresponding M visa.

Asian Nationalities That Require a Tourist Visa

Citizens of mainland China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and most other South and Southeast Asian countries must apply for a Colombian tourist visa before traveling, even for tourism. The tourist visa application is submitted to the Colombian consulate in the applicant's country of residence. Processing time ranges from 5 to 15 business days depending on consular load. There is no visa-on-arrival for these nationalities.

The Spanish Translation Requirement — Including English Documents

Every foreign-language document submitted to the Cancílleria must be accompanied by an official Spanish translation completed by a translator certified by Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This includes English-language documents — there is no exemption for English being an international language. For Japanese, Korean, Chinese, or any other Asian-language document, the translation must be done by a Colombia-certified translator, not a translator in the country of origin. The apostille on the original document does not substitute the translation.

China: Double Legalization Without Apostille

Mainland China is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, which means Chinese public documents cannot be apostilled — they require a different authentication chain. The process: (1) notarization by a Chinese public notary, (2) legalization by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), (3) legalization by the Colombian consulate in Beijing, Guangzhou, or Shanghai, and (4) official Spanish translation by a Colombia-certified translator. This process takes 3–6 weeks. Citizens of Hong Kong and Macao, which are party to the Hague Convention as separate jurisdictions, can apostille their documents instead.
