Hungary at a Glance
Key Facts: Hungary (Magyarország)
Why Hungarian Nationals Are Choosing Colombia
Hungary's flat 15% personal income tax rate is one of the lowest in Europe, yet a growing number of Hungarian professionals — particularly software developers, architects, and entrepreneurs — are drawn to Colombia by the prospect of even lower living costs, warm climate, and international business opportunities. Bogotá's rapidly expanding startup ecosystem, with incubators like “Apps.co” and an active venture capital scene, offers Hungarian tech talent an environment that rewards ambition. The cost differential is significant: monthly living expenses in Bogotá or Medellín run at roughly 45–55% of Budapest's, while salaries earned remotely in euros retain their full value.
The Hungarian expat community in Colombia is small but tight-knit, concentrated mainly in Bogotá. Many Hungarians first arrive as backpackers or tourists, fall in love with Colombia's landscapes — from the Amazon rainforest to the coffee-growing Eje Cafetero and the Caribbean coast — and choose to stay. The country's gastronomy, particularly the diversity of tropical fruits and fresh seafood, and the vibrant cumbia and salsa music scene, offer a joyful contrast to Central European winters. Flights from Budapest (BUD) connect via Madrid, Frankfurt, or Miami in under 16 hours.

Hungary's Health Insurance System — What You Leave Behind
Hungary's mandatory health insurance is managed by the NEAK (Nemzeti Egészségbiztosítási Alapkezelő / National Health Insurance Fund Management), the successor to the former OEP. Coverage is funded jointly by employer and employee social-security contributions and provides access to GP visits, specialist referrals, hospitalisation, maternity care, and partial prescription reimbursement. Self-employed individuals must pay contributions independently to maintain NEAK membership. Private supplementary insurers — Generali Hungary, Allianz Hungária, and Uniqa Hungary — serve those seeking faster access to private clinics and broader benefit packages.
NEAK coverage is strictly territorial and ceases immediately upon relocation outside Hungary. A private international health insurance plan covering Colombia is essential not only for medical access but also for satisfying Migración Colombia's visa documentation requirements. CoVisas Colombia offers plans covering all seven required benefit categories:

Tax Considerations for Hungarian Expats in Colombia
Hungary's National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV / Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal) taxes Hungarian tax residents on their worldwide income at a flat 15% personal income tax rate. Tax residency in Hungary is primarily determined by registered address (lakóhely or tartózkodási hely): a Hungarian who deregisters their Hungarian address and moves their centre of life to Colombia can exit Hungarian tax residency. However, the deregistration must be formally processed through the local government registry (járási hivatal), and NAV must be notified of the change in tax residency.
Upon becoming a Colombian tax resident (183+ days per year in Colombia or primary domicile), Hungarian expats become liable for Colombian income tax on worldwide income at rates from 0% to 39%. Any income from Hungarian sources — dividends, rental income, pension, or freelance fees from Hungarian clients — may be taxable in both countries without a credit mechanism, since no CDI exists between Hungary and Colombia. Pre-departure tax planning with a Hungarian adótanácsadó (tax advisor) and a Colombian Contador Público is strongly recommended.
⚠ No Double Taxation Treaty (CDI) — Hungary & Colombia
Hungary and Colombia have not signed a bilateral tax treaty (CDI). Income from Hungarian sources received by a Colombian tax resident, and Colombian-source income received by a Hungarian tax resident, can each be taxed in both countries without automatic relief. Formal deregistration from Hungary is required to exit Hungarian tax residency. Seek professional advice in both jurisdictions.
Document Legalisation — Getting Your Hungarian Papers Ready
Hungarian documents must be apostilled and officially translated into Spanish before submission to Migración Colombia.
- Obtain the Hungarian Certificate of Good Conduct (Hatósági erkölcsi bizonyítvány): Apply online via the magyarorszag.hu government portal, or in person at any Okmányírodái (document office). The certificate must be original and issued within the past 6 months.
- Obtain an Apostille: Hungary has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since 1973. Apostilles for official documents are issued by the Igazságügyi Minisztérium (Ministry of Justice). The Apostille validates the document for legal use in all member countries including Colombia.
- Certified Hungarian-to-Spanish Translation: Engage a Traductor Oficial Jurado accredited by Colombia's Cancíllería. Only translations by accredited sworn translators are accepted by Migración Colombia.
