1. Ireland at a Glance
🇮🇪 Ireland — Key Facts
2. Why Irish Nationals Move to Colombia
Ireland enjoys one of Europe's most dynamic economies, yet the rising cost of living — particularly housing in Dublin — has prompted a growing number of Irish professionals, remote workers, and retirees to explore life in Colombia. Medellín's eternal spring climate, world-class coffee, and low cost of living offer a compelling alternative to Irish winters and sky-high rents. The Colombian tech and digital nomad community has matured rapidly, and Irish professionals find a welcoming, English-friendly international community alongside the warmth of Colombian culture.
Colombia's Visa M framework, including the M-7 digital nomad visa, enables Irish citizens who work remotely to live legally in Colombia while maintaining income streams from Irish or international clients. Retirees drawn by the M-10 pension visa can stretch their euros dramatically further in Colombia's cities and coastal towns. Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts, the Amazon, and the Andes also appeal to the Irish love of landscape and adventure — making the country an increasingly popular long-term destination for Irish expats seeking a fundamentally different pace of life.

4. Visa Status for Irish Nationals
✔ Visa-Free Entry — 90 DaysIrish passport holders enjoy visa-free access to Colombia for up to 90 days per 180-day period under Colombian immigration policy. This is well-suited for exploratory stays or short-term visits, but those intending to live, work, or reside long-term in Colombia must apply for the appropriate Visa M category through Migración Colombia or the Colombian Embassy in Dublin. Exceeding the permitted stay can result in fines and complications for future visa applications.
5. Visa M — Categories & Costs
Colombia's Migrante (M) visa is the primary residence pathway for foreigners wishing to stay beyond the 90-day visa-free window. The application fee is USD 255, and upon approval, an issuance fee of USD 232 applies. The monthly income threshold references the SMMLV (Salario Mínimo Mensual Legal Vigente), which for 2026 is COP 1,423,500.
| Visa Category | Description | Application Fee | Issuance Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| M-2 | Spouse / Partner of Colombian national or resident | USD 255 | USD 232 |
| M-7 | Digital Nomad / Remote Worker | USD 255 | USD 232 |
| M-10 | Pensioner / Retiree | USD 255 | USD 232 |
| M-13 | Investment / Business | USD 255 | USD 232 |
6. Health System & Insurance
Ireland's public healthcare is delivered by the HSE (Health Service Executive), which is funded through general taxation. Lower-income residents qualify for a Medical Card granting free GP visits and hospital care; others pay subsidized fees. The private sector is robust, with major insurers including VHI Healthcare (the oldest and largest), Laya Healthcare, and Irish Life Health. Leading maternity facilities include the Coombe Women & Infants Hospital and the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, and Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH). Upon emigrating from Ireland, HSE entitlement ceases — Irish nationals living abroad are no longer covered.
In Colombia, the public EPS system covers residents enrolled in the contributory or subsidized regimes, but Visa M applicants must show proof of private health insurance as a mandatory visa condition. Migración Colombia requires a policy that covers the following seven categories:

7. Tax Obligations
Irish tax residents are subject to worldwide income tax administered by the Revenue Commissioners. Ireland operates two income tax bands: 20% on income up to approximately EUR 42,000, and 40% on income above that threshold. These rates are supplemented by USC (Universal Social Charge) and PRSI (Pay Related Social Insurance). Non-domiciled Irish residents may avail of the remittance basis for foreign income. An exit tax applies to unrealized gains on Irish investments when an individual ceases to be an Irish resident. Upon emigrating, individuals should formally notify Revenue of their change in residency status to avoid continued worldwide taxation.
In Colombia, the 183-day rule triggers tax residency: any foreigner who spends 183 or more days in Colombia within a 365-day period becomes liable for Colombian income tax on worldwide income, administered by the DIAN (Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales). There is no double taxation agreement (CDI) between Ireland and Colombia. Without a tax treaty, Irish nationals who become Colombian tax residents may face concurrent tax exposure in both jurisdictions. Specialist cross-border tax advice from professionals versed in both Irish and Colombian tax law is strongly recommended before establishing Colombian residency.
⚠ No Tax Treaty Between Ireland and Colombia
Ireland and Colombia have not signed a Convenio para Evitar la Doble Imposición (CDI). Without a treaty, Irish nationals who become Colombian tax residents may face concurrent tax obligations in both countries. Consult a tax advisor experienced in both Irish and Colombian law before your move.
8. Document Legalization
Ireland joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 1999. Documents issued in Ireland — such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, Garda Police Certificates, and other official documents — can be apostilled by Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs (An Roinn Gnóthaí Eachtracha). Since Ireland's primary official working language for most documents is English, all documents must be translated into Spanish by a certified/sworn translator recognized by Colombian authorities before submission to Migración Colombia.
- Obtain the official document — e.g., a Police Certificate from An Garda Síochána (Garda National Vetting Bureau), or civil registration documents from the General Register Office.
- Obtain the Apostille — Submit the document to Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs (An Roinn Gnóthaí Eachtracha) for apostille certification, confirming its authenticity for international use.
- Certified translation to Spanish — Have the apostilled English-language document translated into Spanish by a certified/sworn translator recognized by Colombian authorities. All official text must be rendered in full.
- Submit to Migración Colombia — Present the apostilled, translated document as part of your Visa M application through the Migración Colombia online portal or at the Colombian Embassy in Dublin.
