Why Kosovo Nationals Choose Colombia in 2026

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and is now recognized by more than 100 countries, including the United States and most EU member states. While the Kosovo passport has historically offered limited travel options, a landmark development in 2024 — Schengen area visa-free access — significantly expanded mobility for Kosovar citizens. Despite this progress, many Kosovo nationals continue to seek long-term residency options outside Europe, and Colombia offers a compelling combination: a country that recognizes Kosovo, a welcoming immigration system, and a fast-growing economy driven by technology, agriculture, and services.

The Kosovar diaspora is one of the largest relative to population in Europe, with significant communities in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. A newer wave of young professionals and entrepreneurs is now exploring Latin America — drawn by Colombia's startup ecosystem in Medellín, the Bogotá tech corridor, and the relatively straightforward Visa M pathway. Remittances represent over 15% of Kosovo's GDP, and many Kosovar professionals working abroad understand the value of diversifying their geographic presence. Colombia's EUR-compatible economy and English-friendly business environment make the transition smoother than expected.

Colombia Migrant Visa M — 2026 Fee Schedule

The Visa M (Migrant) is the primary long-stay pathway for Kosovo nationals. All subcategories are governed by Resolución 5477 de 2022 and share the same official fee structure set by Cancillería.

2026 minimum wage (SMMLV): COP 1,423,500/month. Most Visa M categories require documented monthly income of 3–10 × SMMLV. Fees payable in USD or COP equivalent at the official TRM rate. Kosovo uses EUR natively, simplifying currency conversions.

Health Insurance for Kosovar Expats in Colombia

Colombian immigration law requires all Visa M applicants to hold a valid health insurance policy covering the full visa period, issued by an entity authorized to operate in Colombia. Kosovo's mandatory contributory health scheme (KHAS — Kosovo Health Insurance Scheme) and facilities such as the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo (UCCK) do not extend coverage abroad.

A Colombian-compliant expat health plan is required, covering all seven mandatory categories as specified by Cancillería:

🚑 Accidents
🤒 Illness
🏥 Hospitalization
♿ Disability
🤱 Maternity
✈️ Repatriation
⚰️ Death

Tax Considerations: Kosovo–Colombia (No Double-Taxation Treaty)

As of 2026, Kosovo and Colombia have no bilateral double-taxation agreement (CDI). Kosovo's Tax Administration (TAK — Administrata Tatimore e Kosovës) applies a flat personal income tax rate with progressive elements (10–20% under recent reforms). Kosovo-source income is taxed at source. Diaspora remittances — which represent more than 15% of Kosovo's GDP — are not typically taxed in Kosovo itself.

Once you become a Colombian tax resident (generally after 183 days in Colombia in any 12-month period), Colombia's DIAN will tax your worldwide income. Without a CDI, any Kosovo-source income you continue to receive will be subject to Colombian tax with no automatic foreign tax credit. Kosovo uses the Euro as its official currency, which simplifies some financial planning but does not reduce dual-country tax exposure. Professional tax advice from a Colombian contador público is essential before establishing Colombian residency.

Document Legalization: Kosovo → Colombia (Apostille — 3 Steps)

Kosovo ratified the Hague Apostille Convention in 2016. This means that Kosovar public documents can be authenticated for use in Colombia through the straightforward 3-step apostille procedure.

Note: For criminal clearances, Kosovo Police issues the certificate from KP HQ Pristina. The Correctional Service may issue a separate certificate for incarceration records. Both may be required by Colombian immigration authorities for some visa categories.
