The number of foreigners registering investment in Colombia through the Banco de la República's RDE-IDE form rose 41% between 2023 and 2025, according to figures from the bank's foreign investment registry. The growth reflects a recognizable pattern: foreigners who arrived as digital nomads or tourists discover that Colombia is a viable market for real operations, and the M-Inversionista visa is the mechanism that converts their economic activity into a legally stable migration status.
But the path from "I want to invest" to "I have a valid investor visa" contains technical steps that most applicants underestimate — and the most commonly skipped step is precisely the one that causes the most rejections.

The Minimum Investment Threshold
The M-Inversionista visa requires a demonstrable investment of at least 100 SMLMV (salarios mínimos legales mensuales vigentes) in Colombia. With the 2026 minimum wage set at COP 1,300,000, the minimum is COP 130,000,000 — approximately USD 32,000 at August 2026 rates. Eligible investments include: share capital in a Colombian SAS or limitada company, real estate (registered to the investor), securities portfolio on the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia, or a combination. The investment must be demonstrably active — a company registered but with no capital injected, or a real estate purchase that hasn't been formalized in the public registry, does not satisfy the requirement.
The RDE-IDE Registration: The Most Critical Document
Every inflow of foreign capital to Colombia classified as foreign direct investment must be registered with the Banco de la República through the RDE-IDE form within three months of the funds entering the country. The registration generates a National Investment Registration Number (NRI). Without the NRI, the Cancillería cannot verify the origin, legality, and amount of the investment through its own verification channels. Applications submitted without the NRI are returned for correction — adding weeks to the process. Applications submitted with an NRI for an amount below 100 SMLMV are denied.

From Investor Visa to Permanent Residency
The M-Inversionista visa is valid for up to three years and is renewable. After five continuous years of residence under this category — without any single absence exceeding 365 days — the holder qualifies for the visa R (resident), which is permanent residency status. The visa R allows the holder to work formally in Colombia in any capacity, removes the need for ongoing investment documentation, and serves as the step before naturalization under Law 2332/2023.
