Why Greek Nationals Are Choosing Colombia

Greece's economic challenges over the past decade, combined with persistently high youth unemployment and heavy taxation, have pushed a significant share of educated professionals — engineers, doctors, IT specialists, and entrepreneurs — to explore opportunities abroad. Colombia has emerged as an unexpected but compelling destination: a rapidly growing economy, a government that actively courts foreign investment through incentives and visas, and a cost of living that can be 50–60% lower than Athens. The Mediterranean-like warmth of the Colombian coastline, particularly around Cartagena and Santa Marta, resonates with Greeks accustomed to sea, sun, and outdoor living.

Medellín's infrastructure — its metro system, public libraries, and tech parks — appeals to Greek urban professionals who value functionality alongside warmth. Colombia's gastronomic diversity, vibrant cultural life, and growing community of European expats create an inclusive environment for Greek newcomers. The journey from Athens (ATH) to Bogotá typically involves one connection in Madrid or Miami — a manageable 14–18 hour trip — and the time difference of 6–7 hours is workable for remote teams.

Entry Requirements for Greek Passport Holders

✓ VISA-FREE — Up to 90 Days

Greek citizens holding a valid Greek or EU passport enjoy visa-free access to Colombia for stays of up to 90 days per entry. This applies to tourism, business meetings, and exploratory visits. Greek nationals wishing to stay longer, work, run a business, or study formally in Colombia must apply for a long-stay visa. Overstaying the permitted period carries financial penalties and may result in entry bans.

Colombian Migrant (M) Visa Options for Greek Nationals

The Migrant (M) visa is Colombia's principal long-stay category. Greek applicants can access the four most common subcategories listed below. All applications go through Colombia's Cancíllería, and valid health insurance covering the statutory benefit categories is required.

Greece's Health Insurance System — What You Leave Behind

Greece's social health insurance is structured around two main bodies: EFKA (ΕΦΚΑ — Unified Social Security Entity), which collects social contributions from employers and employees, and EOPYY (ΕΟΠΥΥ — National Organisation for Healthcare Services), which delivers the actual healthcare. The system covers employed workers, the self-employed, farmers, and their dependants. The standard benefit basket includes primary care, specialist consultations, hospitalisation, pharmaceuticals, and maternity services. However, Greece's public health system has faced chronic underfunding, leading many Greeks to complement statutory coverage with private insurance from providers such as Eurolife FFH, Generali Greece, or Interamerican.

EFKA/EOPYY coverage applies exclusively within Greece and has no international portability. Once you relocate to Colombia, you will need a private international health insurance plan that complies with Migración Colombia's requirements. CoVisas Colombia offers plans that cover all seven statutory benefit categories:

✓ Accidents
✓ Illness
✓ Hospitalization
✓ Disability
✓ Maternity
✓ Repatriation
✓ Death

Tax Considerations for Greek Expats in Colombia

Greece's Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE / ΑΑΔΕ — Ανεξάρτητη Αρχή Δημοσίων Εσόδων) taxes Greek tax residents on their worldwide income. Tax residency in Greece is established by the principle of φορολογική κατοικία (tax domicile): spending 183 or more days per year in Greece, or maintaining a habitual abode and family/economic ties there. A Greek national who becomes a Colombian tax resident must ensure they have formally changed their tax domicile with AADE — a process requiring deregistration from the Greek tax authority and registration with Colombia's DIAN.

Greece also applies a φόρος αποχώρησης (exit tax) on business assets when an individual transfers tax residency outside the EU/EEA. This may apply to Greek professionals holding shares in Greek companies or significant business assets at the time of departure. In Colombia, worldwide income of tax residents is taxed at progressive rates (0%–39%). Without a CDI between Greece and Colombia, dual taxation exposure requires careful planning with advisors in both countries.

⚠ No Double Taxation Treaty (CDI) — Greece & Colombia

Greece and Colombia have not concluded a bilateral tax treaty. Greek-source income received by Colombian tax residents — and Colombian-source income received by Greek tax residents — can be taxed in both jurisdictions without automatic credit or exemption relief. Consult tax professionals in both countries before formalising your residency change.

Document Legalisation — Getting Your Greek Papers Ready

Greek documents must be apostilled by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and officially translated into Spanish by an accredited translator before submission to Migración Colombia.

  1. Obtain the Greek Criminal Record Extract (Αντίγραφο Ποινικού Μητρώου): Apply at any KEP (Citizen Service Centre / ΚΕΠ), at the Prosecutor's Office (Εισαγγελία), or through the Hellenic Police (hellenicpolice.gr). The extract must be an original, issued within the past 6 months.
  2. Obtain an Apostille: Submit the original certificate to Greece's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών) for Apostille authentication. Greece joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 1985. The Apostille validates the document for use in all member countries, including Colombia.
  3. Certified Greek-to-Spanish Translation: Commission a translation from a Traductor Oficial Jurado accredited by Colombia's Cancíllería. Only accredited sworn translators' work is accepted by Migración Colombia.
