2. Why Malawian Nationals Choose Colombia

Malawi, known as the "Warm Heart of Africa," sits on the shores of the magnificent Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa). Under President Lazarus Chakwera, the country is pursuing reforms — but the 2023 dual humanitarian crisis (Cyclone Freddy combined with a major cholera outbreak) underlined the persistent fragility of domestic conditions. Malawian professionals in health, education, and technology find Colombia's growing service sector, universities, and NGO landscape increasingly attractive as a destination for building international careers.

Malawi's English-speaking population has a significant advantage: Colombia's largest English-speaking expat community in Bogotá and Medellín means that Malawians can integrate professionally before mastering Spanish. Tobacco has historically been Malawi's dominant export, but a growing cadre of agricultural researchers, public health professionals, and tech graduates are seeking opportunities in Latin America's third-largest economy. PEPFAR and Global Fund-supported health experience gives many Malawian health workers globally recognised credentials.

4. Prior Visa Requirement

5. Colombian Migrant Visa (Type M) — Costs 2026

The Migrant Visa (Visa M) grants the right to reside long-term in Colombia. All subtypes share the same government fee. The M-13 pensioner category requires minimum monthly income of 3 × SMMLV (3 × COP 1,423,500 = COP 4,270,500 ≈ USD 1,020 in 2026).

6. Health Insurance in Colombia for Malawian Expats

Colombian law requires all visa holders to maintain valid health insurance. Malawi's health system — anchored by Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre — faces persistent resource challenges. The NHIS, established in 2018, has limited rollout. PEPFAR and the Global Fund provide critical HIV and malaria support. Cyclone Freddy in 2023 and subsequent cholera outbreaks strained the system further. Malawian expats in Colombia must rely entirely on their international health policy.

Complex medical cases in Malawi are typically referred to Johannesburg, South Africa. A comprehensive international health plan with emergency medical evacuation and repatriation to Johannesburg or Lilongwe is strongly recommended for Malawian nationals in Colombia.

7. Taxation — Malawi and Colombia (No Double Taxation Treaty)

There is no Double Taxation Convention (CDI) between Malawi and Colombia. Malawian nationals who become Colombian tax residents (183+ days in any 365-day period) are subject to Colombian income tax on their worldwide income, regardless of taxes paid to the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA). Tobacco-sector income, business revenues, or remittances from Malawi may all face double-taxation risk if not properly structured.

The MRA applies a progressive income tax up to 40% — among the higher rates in Southern Africa. Tobacco remains the dominant export commodity, though diversification efforts are ongoing. The Malawian Kwacha (MWK) is an independent currency subject to significant exchange rate volatility. There is no capital gains tax and no inheritance tax in Malawi. VAT stands at 16.5%. Malawian expats in Colombia should engage a cross-border tax specialist at the outset of their residency.

8. Document Legalization for Colombia

Malawi is a Hague Apostille Convention member state (as a successor state to the UK's 1967 ratification). Malawian documents for use in Colombia therefore follow the simplified 3-step apostille process, which is faster and less costly than the 4-step non-Hague chain.

3-Step Apostille Process (Hague Member)

  1. Document Issuance / Notarization: Obtain the document from the competent Malawian authority (e.g., Malawi Police Service for the criminal record certificate, civil registry for birth certificates).
  2. Apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Submit the document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lilongwe, which will affix the Hague apostille stamp authenticating the document for international use.
  3. Certified English-to-Spanish Translation in Colombia: Have the apostilled document translated from English into Spanish by a certified translator registered with the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores).

Criminal Record Certificate (Police Character Certificate)

Requested from the Malawi Police Service (CID HQ, Lilongwe) or through a Malawi High Commission abroad. Required for most Colombian visa applications. As a Hague apostille document, it only requires apostille and certified translation — no Colombian embassy authentication step is needed.
