2. Why Burundian Nationals Choose Colombia

Burundi, one of the world's poorest countries with a GDP per capita of approximately USD 230, has experienced significant emigration following the 2015 political crisis. Under President Evariste Ndayishimiye, the country is rebuilding, but the road is long — malnutrition, malaria, HIV, and one of the lowest doctor-patient ratios globally remain pressing realities. Burundian professionals, particularly those trained in health, education, and agronomy, find Colombia's relative stability and growing economy an attractive destination for building new careers.

Lake Tanganyika and Burundi's coffee and tea sectors have produced agricultural professionals and traders with internationally applicable skills. Colombia's own excellence in specialty coffee and its Pacific agricultural zone create natural synergies for Burundian agronomy professionals. Francophone Burundians find the Spanish learning pathway accessible, and Colombia's growing diaspora services ecosystem is increasingly welcoming to Central and East African migrants.

3. Colombian Embassy / Consulate for Burundi

Embassy of Colombia in Kenya (accredited to Burundi)

4. Prior Visa Requirement

⚠️ Prior Visa Required for Colombia

Nationals are not on the visa exemption list (Resolución 5488 de 2022) and must obtain a prior Colombian visa from the nearest consulate. Visit cancilleria.gov.co.

Burundian passport holders must obtain a Colombian visa from the Embassy of Colombia in Nairobi, Kenya, before entering Colombia. All applications must be submitted through the online portal before any consular appointment. There is no visa-on-arrival option for Burundian nationals, and entry without prior authorization is not permitted.

5. Colombian Migrant Visa (Type M) — Costs 2026

The Migrant Visa (Visa M) grants the right to reside long-term in Colombia. All subtypes share the same government fee. The M-13 pensioner category requires minimum monthly income of 3 × SMMLV (3 × COP 1,423,500 = COP 4,270,500 ≈ USD 1,020 in 2026).

6. Health Insurance in Colombia for Burundian Expats

Colombian law requires all visa holders to maintain valid health insurance. Burundi has one of the lowest doctor-patient ratios in the world. The Hôpital Prince Régent Charles in Bujumbura is the main referral hospital, but operates with severe resource constraints. The national INSS is very limited, and organisations including MSF, WHO, UNICEF, and Partners in Health fill critical gaps. Malaria, HIV, and malnutrition are ongoing public health challenges. This context means Burundian expats in Colombia must rely entirely on their international policy for all medical needs.

Complex medical cases in Burundi are referred to Kampala (Uganda) or Nairobi (Kenya). A comprehensive plan with emergency evacuation and repatriation coverage — even back to Nairobi — is strongly recommended for Burundian nationals resident in Colombia.

7. Taxation — Burundi and Colombia (No Double Taxation Treaty)

There is no Double Taxation Convention (CDI) between Burundi and Colombia. Burundian nationals who become Colombian tax residents (183+ days in any 365-day period) are subject to Colombian income tax on their worldwide income, regardless of taxes paid to the Office Burundais des Recettes (OBR) in Gitega. On already very limited incomes, this double-taxation risk requires careful management from day one of Colombian residency.

Burundi's OBR administers a progressive income tax of up to 30% — one of the lower ceiling rates in the region, reflecting the country's very low income levels. Coffee and tea are the primary export commodities. Tax revenues represent one of the lowest ratios to GDP in the world, and the informal economy is extensive. The Burundian franc (BIF) is a separate currency not pegged to any major currency bloc. Burundian expats in Colombia should engage a bilingual tax specialist to navigate obligations in both jurisdictions.

8. Document Legalization for Colombia

Burundi is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Burundian documents for use in Colombia must go through the full 4-step legalization chain, with the final consular step processed through the Colombian Embassy in Nairobi. Documents may be in French or Kirundi — certified Spanish translation is required at the final step.

4-Step Legalization Chain (Non-Hague)

  1. Local Notarization: Have the document issued or notarized before a Burundian notary or competent authority in Gitega or Bujumbura (Procureur de la République).
  2. Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Legalization: Submit the document to the Ministère des Affaires Étrangères in Gitega for authentication of the official signature and seal.
  3. Colombian Embassy Authentication: Present the MoFA-authenticated document to the Embassy of Colombia in Nairobi, Kenya, for final consular legalization.
  4. Certified Translation: Once in Colombia, have the document translated from French or Kirundi into Spanish by a certified translator registered with the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Criminal Record Certificate

Obtained from the PNB (Police Nationale du Burundi, Casier Judiciaire) or the Procureur of Gitega or Bujumbura. Required for most Colombian visa applications and must complete all 4 steps of the legalization chain before submission to Colombian immigration.
