2. Why Malaysian Nationals Choose Colombia

Malaysia's highly educated, English-proficient professional class has long been globally mobile, and Colombia has emerged as an unexpected but compelling destination. Medellín and Bogotá offer strong coworking communities, an established digital nomad scene, and a cost of living significantly lower than Kuala Lumpur for comparable quality of life — particularly in terms of housing, private healthcare, and dining. Malaysia is also one of Southeast Asia's leading medical tourism hubs, and Malaysians evaluating Colombia's healthcare system often find that private hospitals in Bogotá and Medellín compare favorably with what they are accustomed to.

Malaysia's MM2H (Malaysia My Second Home) programme has made Malaysians more aware of international residency frameworks, and this awareness translates into interest in Colombia's visa M categories — particularly for professionals seeking a base in Latin America. The growing Malaysia–Colombia business relationship in palm oil, rubber, and processed food exports has also created professional migration pathways. Malaysian entrepreneurs in Islamic finance, halal certification, and e-commerce have found complementary market opportunities in Colombia's expanding economy.

4. Visa Status for Malaysian Nationals

⚠️ Visa Required for Colombia

Malaysian passport holders are not included in Resolución 5488 de 2022 and must obtain a prior visa from the nearest Colombian consulate before traveling to Colombia. Contact the Colombian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur for current requirements at cancilleria.gov.co.

5. Colombian Visa M — Categories & Fees

The Colombian Visa M (Migrante) is the primary long-stay visa for foreign nationals extending their stay beyond the initial visa-free window. All categories carry the same government fee: USD 255 (study/application fee) + USD 232 (issuance fee upon approval), for a total of approximately USD 487. Fees are paid online via the Cancillería portal.

M-10 IndependentSelf-employed / freelancer working in ColombiaUSD 255USD 232
M-13 Digital NomadRemote worker for foreign companies/clientsUSD 255USD 232

A valid health insurance policy covering the full visa duration is a mandatory requirement for all Visa M categories, including hospitalization, illness, and repatriation coverage.

6. Health System in Malaysia

Malaysia operates a dual-track healthcare system — heavily subsidized public hospitals and clinics managed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) alongside a world-class private sector. Workplace injury and social security benefits for employees are managed by SOCSO (Social Security Organisation / PERKESO). Malaysia is a leading regional medical tourism destination, accredited by JCI, with top private hospitals including Prince Court Medical Centre, Sunway Medical Centre, Gleneagles KL, and Pantai Hospital. Private health insurance is widely held by Malaysia's middle and upper classes: major providers include AIA Bhd, Great Eastern Life, and Prudential BSN Takaful.

When Malaysian nationals relocate to Colombia, their Malaysian health insurance — whether private or employment-linked — does not cover Colombian territory. Colombia requires all Visa M holders to maintain Colombian-compliant health insurance valid throughout the visa period. An expat-specific policy covering all seven mandatory risk categories allows Malaysian nationals to access Colombia's strong private hospital network immediately, without the complexity of joining the Colombian EPS contributory system.

7. Tax Considerations for Malaysian Expats in Colombia

Malaysia's tax system underwent a significant change on January 1, 2022: the LHDN / IRB (Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri / Inland Revenue Board) shifted Malaysia from a purely territorial to a worldwide income taxation model for residents. Foreign-sourced income that is remitted to Malaysia by Malaysian tax residents is now taxable (with certain transitional exemptions and specific carve-outs). Residents are taxed at progressive rates reaching up to 30%. The MM2H programme offers long-stay visa options for wealthy foreign nationals but also affects Malaysian nationals' tax planning when based abroad.

In Colombia, foreign nationals who spend 183 or more days in a calendar year become Colombian tax residents and must declare their worldwide income to the DIAN. There is no Double Taxation Treaty (CDI) between Malaysia and Colombia. Malaysian expats who become Colombian tax residents while also being considered Malaysian tax residents (based on registration or remittances to Malaysia) may face dual taxation without treaty protection. Professional tax advice from a Colombian contador público — ideally one familiar with both the Malaysian post-2022 worldwide income rules and Colombian DIAN requirements — is essential. The SMMLV 2026 is COP 1,423,500 per month, the reference for various Colombian thresholds.

8. Document Legalization for Malaysia

Malaysia is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Malaysian documents require a full diplomatic chain legalization process before they are recognized in Colombia. The Certificate of Good Conduct (Surat Akuan Kelakuan Baik) is issued by PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) — apply at Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur or via any Malaysian Embassy or High Commission abroad. Biometrics are required.
