Why Burkinabé Nationals Are Moving to Colombia

Burkina Faso has faced one of the world's most severe jihadist insurgencies since 2015, with JNIM and ISGS forces now effectively controlling or contesting approximately 60% of national territory as of 2026. The military junta led by Ibrahim Traoré since 2022 has expelled French forces and invited Russian Wagner/Africa Corps advisors, while the humanitarian situation has deteriorated sharply — with millions internally displaced and basic services unavailable across large swaths of the country. Against this backdrop, educated Burkinabé — many of whom previously studied in France, Côte d'Ivoire, or Senegal — are exploring new destinations. Colombia offers political stability, a growing economy, and an affordable lifestyle that appeals to Burkinabé professionals seeking safety and professional opportunities abroad.

Cotton and gold are Burkina Faso's main export commodities, and a small but financially capable subset of Burkinabé families connected to the artisanal mining sector or agribusiness has accumulated savings — often held in CFA franc accounts in Abidjan or Dakar — that are compatible with Colombia's Visa M investment thresholds. The shared French-language education background means Burkinabé professionals adapt relatively quickly to Spanish, particularly those already fluent in both French and local languages, who tend to demonstrate strong multilingual aptitude.

Colombian Consular Representation for Burkinabé Nationals

🏛️ Embassy of Colombia in Senegal or Côte d'Ivoire (Accredited for Burkina Faso)

Dakar (Senegal): Rue 6, Point E, Dakar — edakar@cancilleria.gov.co — dakar.embajada.gov.co

Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire): Contact cancilleria.gov.co to confirm the current accreditation and address for the Colombian Embassy in Abidjan.

Note: Colombia does not maintain a resident embassy in Ouagadougou. Burkinabé nationals must process visas and document legalization through either the Colombian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, or the Colombian Embassy in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire — both hold accreditation for Burkina Faso. Contact cancilleria.gov.co to confirm which mission is currently processing Burkinabé applications. Burkinabé residing in France may apply through the Colombian Embassy in Paris.

Visa Requirements for Burkinabé Nationals Entering Colombia

⚠️ Prior Visa Required for Colombia

Nationals are not on the visa exemption list (Resolución 5488 de 2022) and must obtain a prior Colombian visa from the nearest consulate. Visit cancilleria.gov.co.

⚠️ Airport Transit Visa — Article 8, Res. 5488

Nationals also require an airport transit visa for any layover at a Colombian airport (international transit zone only, up to 24 hours). Obtain from the nearest Colombian consulate before travel.

Burkinabé nationals must obtain a Colombian entry visa before traveling to Colombia. Additionally, under Article 8 of Resolución 5488 de 2022 (as modified by Resolución 3717 de 2023), Burkinabé nationals must hold an Airport Transit Visa for any layover at a Colombian airport — including El Dorado in Bogotá — even within the international transit zone. Both visas must be obtained at the nearest Colombian diplomatic mission before departure. Given travel route limitations from Ouagadougou, most Burkinabé will transit through Dakar or Paris, making pre-departure visa processing at those cities' Colombian missions practical.

Health Insurance for Burkinabé Nationals in Colombia

Burkina Faso's health system is overseen by the Ministère de la Santé. The main public hospitals are CHU Yalgado Ouédraogo and CHU Bogodogo in Ouagadougou. The CNSS (Caisse Nationale de Sécurité Sociale) covers formal-sector workers, and the AMU (Assurance Maladie Universelle) initiative has had limited rollout. Given that the jihadist insurgency affects approximately 60% of national territory, healthcare access is severely limited outside urban centers. MSF, MSF-OCB, WHO, and UNICEF maintain significant operations in conflict-affected areas. Complex cases in Ouagadougou are referred to Dakar (Senegal), Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), or Paris (France) for specialized treatment.

In Colombia, Visa M holders must maintain valid health insurance for the entire duration of their stay. CoVisas Colombia's plans cover all seven statutory categories required by Migración Colombia:

✔ Accidents
✔ Illness
✔ Hospitalization
✔ Disability
✔ Maternity
✔ Repatriation
✔ Death

Tax Considerations for Burkinabé Nationals in Colombia

In Burkina Faso, the Direction Générale des Impôts et des Taxes (DGI) administers tax collection. The personal income tax (IUTS — Impôt Unique sur les Traitements et Salaires) is progressive, reaching up to 25% on Burkinabé-source income. CNSS contributions apply to formal-sector workers for social security. The CFA franc (XOF), pegged to the euro through UEMOA, provides currency stability. Gold exports are increasingly significant to the economy. There is no capital gains tax and no inheritance tax in Burkina Faso.

In Colombia, Burkinabé nationals who become tax residents are subject to DIAN taxation on their worldwide income at progressive rates from 0% to 39%. There is no Double Taxation Convention (CDI) between Colombia and Burkina Faso. Burkinabé nationals with gold sector income, CFA-denominated savings, or rental income from properties in Ouagadougou must declare all income to DIAN once Colombian tax residency is established. No treaty relief is available to mitigate potential double taxation. A Colombian contador público should be consulted before the first Colombian tax filing.

Document Legalization for Burkinabé Nationals

Burkina Faso is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. All official Burkinabé documents — birth and marriage certificates, criminal record certificates (Casier Judiciaire N°3), academic diplomas, professional titles — require a full four-step diplomatic legalization chain before Colombian authorities will accept them.

4-Step Legalization Chain (Non-Hague)

  1. Notarization in Burkina Faso: The document is authenticated by a Burkinabé notary or the relevant issuing authority. The Casier Judiciaire N°3 is obtained from the Procureur du Faso at the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Ouagadougou.
  2. Ministère des Affaires Étrangères (Ouagadougou): The notarized document is submitted to the Burkinabé Ministry of Foreign Affairs for country-level authentication. Given the junta government's administrative changes since 2022, verify the current procedure with the Colombian Embassy in Dakar or Abidjan before submission. Allow 5–15 business days.
  3. Embassy of Colombia in Dakar or Abidjan (accredited for Burkina Faso): The MoFA-authenticated document is presented to the Colombian Embassy in Dakar (Senegal) or Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire) for diplomatic legalization. Confirm which mission is processing Burkinabé applications by contacting cancilleria.gov.co. Allow 5–10 business days; appointment required.
  4. Certified Translation into Spanish: All legalized documents must be translated from French into Spanish by a translator certified by the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. See the list at cancilleria.gov.co.
