Gambian nationals must obtain a Colombian entry visa before traveling to Colombia. Additionally, under Article 8 of Resolución 5488 de 2022 (as amended by Resolución 3717 de 2023), Gambian nationals are required to hold an Airport Transit Visa for any layover at a Colombian international airport — including El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá — even within the international transit zone. The Gambia is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. All public documents issued in The Gambia — including birth certificates, police clearance certificates from the Gambia Police Force (GPF), marriage certificates, academic credentials, and identity documents — require the full 4-step diplomatic legalization chain to be accepted by Colombian authorities. Notably, since The Gambia's official language is English, the documents are already in a widely recognized language, but they still require certified Spanish translation at the final step.

4-Step Legalization Chain (Non-Hague Convention)

1. Notarization in The Gambia: The original document must be authenticated by a Gambian notary public or, where applicable, by the issuing authority itself (e.g., the Gambia Police Force – Criminal Investigations Department, CID, Banjul for police clearance certificates; the Registrar General's Department for civil documents; the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for academic records). Ensure documents bear original signatures and official seals — photocopies are not accepted.
2. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad (Banjul): The notarized document is presented to the Gambian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Banjul for national-level authentication. 3. Colombian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal (accredited for The Gambia): The MFA-authenticated document is presented to the Colombian Embassy in Dakar for diplomatic legalization.
